Who Is Kay's Strays?
I'm Kay, and I LOVE cats!
However, I'm not necessarily fond of being considered the Crazy Cat Lady. But if things stay the way they are, I may be very close to actually deserving that title! :)
In 2022 my beloved cat, Pumpkin, crossed the Rainbow Bridge at the ripe age of 21 years old. It seems that before his time to go, he must have sent out a message to the Universe saying that I was going to need a new furry friend, or two. A short time before his passing we ended up adding 2 strays to our houshold, one of which was pregnant. Our household cat population multiplied exponentially!
Since Pumpkin's passing, it seems like more and more strays, particularly pregnant ones, have gotten the message that our neighborhood is the place to land. We have had so many animals that we have found, attempted to locate their owners, and eventually found them a new home.
None of the animals that are currently living with us are ones that we sought out. We are NOT rehoming beloved pets that we had promised a forever home and then decided to abandon. The animals listed on this page are mostly offspring that were born to stray cats which we have cared for since day 1 of their lives.
That being said, I am quite fond of all of them and they have gotten a good life with our family. They will leave a hole in my heart once they gone.
Questions I have been asked
Why don't you turn them in to the county shelter?
-Polk County is a kill shelter and is known as having the highest euthansia rate in the state of Florida. Why don't you turn them in to a rescue?
At their current ages it would be extremely stressful for the cats to endure adjusting to a Rescue, then having to adjust again after finding a home. We are attempting to rehome them as peacefully as possible.
When they were tiny kittens we inquired with DOZENS of rescues without recieving favorable outcomes. One rescue had agreed to take our kittens, but when the time came that they were old enough to go we were denied due to overcrowding issues.
We gave up for a few months, but are now reviving our efforts to find good homes for these animals. Why don't you turn them in to SPCA?
-Same reason. Overcrowding. Why don't you list them on Social Media rehoming sites?
-We have done that as well. From my posts being deleted, to getting warnings about improper content (of which there was none!), to having to weed out sketchy responses, social media is a nightmare for rehoming animals. The best results I have had is from personal friends spreading the word and from posting on my personal profiles. Why are you requiring an appliation?
-Answering calls and messages for rehoming is tedious and time consuming. I have lost a considerable amount of time dealing with people through messaging who committed to take a kitten only have them ghost me in the end. So, I am trying a new approach in order to better vet inquiries and to save time. What shots or veterinary care have these animals had?
-Please see the bio of the individual cat you desire for this information. How much does it cost?
-There is no fee for rehoming, however, a donation of cash or gift card is appreciated, especially if taking an animal that has been spayed or neutered, as we have personally paid these expenses out of our own pockets. How many cats have you helped?
-We have personally helped approximately 25 cats and kittens since 2018. We provided food, water, sanitary sleeping and toileting environments for all, and shots, spaying/neutering, skin disease treatment, and flea treatment for many, funding their needs from our personal accounts. Four of the animals we added as permanent family members.
